A Pattern Language
Sunday, May 11, 2003
I started reading A Pattern Language this week. After reading a number of excellent books whose authors were influenced by Alexander's work, I am not disappointed.
Perhaps it is the idealist in me that finds the book so attractive. The book contains a vast number of elegant, simple, and powerful patterns, that when applied locally generate the high-level patterns described at the beginning of the book. There are many similarities to agile software development's emergent design and refactoring. Reading Alexander reminds me of the first time I read Tolkien: I am inspired to write an imitation.
I find myself sleeping less and reading even more than usual.
